Albert Einstein spent much of his life trying to understand some of the biggest mysteries in existence. From the nature of time and space to the behaviour of light and energy, his work encouraged people to look beyond what they could immediately see. Yet there is another mystery that has fascinated humans for thousands of years: the mysterious and often unpredictable nature of cats.
At first, science and cats might seem to belong to completely different worlds. Einstein dealt with complex theories and mathematical equations, while cats are more likely to be found sleeping on a sofa, chasing a toy or staring intensely at something their owner cannot see. However, there is an interesting connection between the two curiosities.
Einstein’s approach to science was strongly connected with asking questions. He was willing to challenge accepted ideas and imagine possibilities that others had not considered. Cats appear to approach everyday life in much the same spirit.
A new object enters the room and the cat investigates it. A cupboard door opens and the cat wants to know what is inside. A strange noise comes from another room and suddenly the cat becomes an investigator.
Nothing is allowed to remain unexplored for long.
Cats are also remarkable observers. Their eyes are designed to detect movement, while their ears can pick up sounds that humans cannot easily hear. They can watch a bird outside a window for an astonishing amount of time, remaining completely focused on every movement.
For a scientist, careful observation is essential. For a cat, it can mean the difference between successfully catching prey and missing an opportunity.
There is also the mystery of feline behaviour. Why does a cat sometimes choose a cardboard box instead of an expensive bed? Why can a tiny piece of string become more exciting than a sophisticated toy? Why does a cat suddenly race through the house at night?
Science can explain many aspects of feline behaviour, but cats still manage to retain an element of mystery.
Perhaps Einstein would have appreciated that mystery. His scientific work demonstrated that the universe could be far stranger than people originally imagined. Time could behave differently depending on circumstances, light could display remarkable properties, and gravity could be understood in an entirely new way.
Cats provide their own much smaller mysteries.
They can appear to understand routines, recognise familiar voices and learn how to manipulate their environment. Some cats even seem to understand exactly how to get what they want from their human companions.
And then there is imagination.
Einstein recognised the importance of imagination in thinking and discovery. Cats demonstrate their own creative approach to life through play. A paper bag becomes a hiding place, a box becomes a fortress and a shadow becomes something worth chasing.
It is important not to claim that Einstein specifically wrote about cats in this way. Many supposed Einstein quotations about cats found online cannot be reliably verified. The connection is better understood as an Einstein-inspired exploration of curiosity, observation and wonder.
Ultimately, Einstein’s world was one of questions. Cats live in a world of questions too although their questions are considerably more practical.
Where is the food?
Who moved my favourite sleeping place?
What is inside that box?
And, perhaps most importantly, why has my human closed the door?
Science may explain much about the universe, but cats remind us that there will always be mysteries worth exploring. Sometimes genius is about discovering extraordinary answers. Sometimes it is simply having the curiosity to keep looking.
