An unusual wildlife rescue in Norfolk attracted attention in July 2026 after an escaped Savannah cat was finally captured after spending around two months outside its home. The striking cat had been seen roaming in the countryside near Bramerton, south of Norwich, before being discovered injured in a plant pot in a back garden.
The cat, named Blaze, had escaped from its home in May. It was first reported in the area on 23 June, when a member of the public spotted the large, spotted feline in a field between the A146 Loddon Road and Framingham Lane. From a distance, one witness described it as looking like a small leopard.
A Cat That Stood Out
Savannah cats have a distinctive appearance. They can have long legs, large ears and spotted coats, characteristics inherited partly from their wild serval ancestry.
The Savannah is a hybrid produced by crossing a serval, a wild African cat, with a domestic cat. Different generations can have very different characteristics, depending on how far removed they are from the original serval cross.
Because of its unusual appearance and size, Blaze attracted considerable attention while it was roaming around Norfolk.
The Search for Blaze
Kevin Murphy of Norfolk Wildlife Rescue became involved in attempts to locate the escaped cat. The animal had been difficult to catch and had travelled several miles from its home.
The owner was eventually identified after Blaze was safely captured and its microchip was checked. The owner was confirmed to live in the Norwich area, approximately four miles from where the cat was eventually found.
The rescue required patience because attempting to catch an unfamiliar animal can be challenging. A frightened cat may run, hide or defend itself if it feels threatened.
Found Hiding in a Plant Pot
The eventual discovery was rather unexpected. Blaze was found sitting inside a plant pot in somebody’s back garden.
By this stage, the cat had suffered injuries during its time outdoors. According to the rescue organisation, Blaze had a broken right paw and a wound on its chest. A net was used to capture the cat safely before it was placed in a cage and taken for veterinary treatment.
For an animal accustomed to living with people, spending weeks outside can create numerous dangers. Roads, other animals, unfamiliar surroundings, lack of food and water, and injuries can all become serious problems.
Understanding Savannah Cats
Savannah cats are not simply domestic cats with unusual markings. Their wild ancestry means that some individuals can retain physical and behavioural characteristics associated with servals.
The legal requirements for keeping them in the UK can also depend on their generation. The BBC reported that owners of servals and first-generation Savannah cats require a Dangerous Wild Animals licence, while Blaze was believed to be an F2 Savannah, for which the owner did not require that licence.
This case also highlights why microchipping pets is so important. Because Blaze was microchipped, rescuers were able to establish who the owner was once the cat had been safely caught.
A Safe Ending After a Long Adventure
Blaze’s Norfolk adventure ended with the cat receiving veterinary care for its injuries. What began as an unusual sighting in the countryside became a prolonged search involving wildlife rescuers and members of the public.
The incident is a reminder that when an unusual or unfamiliar animal is found outside, people should avoid approaching or attempting to catch it themselves. Contacting an appropriate rescue organisation allows trained people to assess the situation and reduce the risk of injury to both the animal and the public.
Blaze’s story also shows how quickly a much-loved pet can become vulnerable when it escapes. Fortunately, after two months outdoors, the Savannah cat was located, identified and taken for treatment.
